What are we looking for?

Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Huntersville is seeking experienced professionals to join our VECCS Level II-Certified Emergency and Trauma service as 2nd and 3rd Shift ER Technicians. This position is 7 days on/7 days off, with some weekend, holiday and on-call coverage. 3rd shift positions include an overnight shift differential.

**PLEASE NOTE: All applicants must have 1-2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant or technician to be considered for this position.**

What does the role entail?


The 3rd Shift ER technician is responsible for all aspects of the Emergency department flow including patient triage, all phases of the diagnostic, treatment and discharge process, assisting and performing emergency procedures, updating patient orders and client communications.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Calculating dosages and administering medications via varied routes
  • Performing a variety of diagnostic procedures including radiology, lab tests, ECG and assisting with ultrasonic evaluations
  • Checking vital signs and performing abbreviated patient assessments (including temperature, pulse, heart rate, respiratory rate and effort, blood pressure via Doppler, etc)
  • Phone triage and other essential after-hours client care services including check-in, check-out and taking payment
  • Maintaining a neat and organized work environment
  • Assisting ER ICU Technicians in their daily duties
  • Performing a variety of standard and advanced patient treatments including minor wound care, catheterization (various), patient preparation for sterile procedures & trauma stabilization
  • Take a proactive role with life-saving measures, including CPR, as necessary


What are the candidate requirements?

The successful candidate will have excellent communication and multi-tasking skills as well as a keen attention to detail. S/he will be able to work well as part of a team, sharing the caseload and having a proactive approach to helping maintain a shared sense of responsibility among the Emergency service. Sh/e will also possess the following qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant/technician
  • Strong technical skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, general laboratory, anesthesia and pharmacology skills
  • Knowledge of normal patient (cat/dog) parameters
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Working knowledge of the indications, adverse effects and dosing considerations for commonly-used veterinary medications
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic and good organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Schedule compatibility including weekends, some holidays and on-call
