Carolina Veterinary Specialists is looking for a qualified Veterinary Assistant to work in our busy Surgery department at our Huntersville location. Duties will include all aspects of surgical flow, cleaning and turning over surgical instruments, ordering or replacing instruments as needed, maintain equipment in pack/prep area, cleaning and turning over OR's, assisting in anesthesia machine maintenance, assisting with surgical appointments as needed, helping with diagnostics prior to surgery, assisting with minor anesthetic monitoring during times in the pre-, peri-, and post-operative periods, assisting with patient treatments while in hospital. Schedule would generally be Monday through Friday daytimes, though some flexibility may be necessary.


Surgical Pack/Prep Assistant Job Description:

  • Maintain sterile environment in surgical suites, including bleaching, mopping, and cleaning of surgical tables and equipment
  • Clean, maintain and pack surgical instruments
  • Sterilize surgical instruments/equipment
  • Maintain all equipment used in pack/prep area
  • Assist in anesthesia machine maintenance
  • Assist in surgical equipment maintenance
  • Re-order instruments as needed to maintain surgical packs
  • Assure quality control and maintenance schedules for surgical equipment including autoclave and gas sterilization equipment
  • Proper handling of diagnostic specimens during procedure and facilitating the proper care and transfer to laboratory including accurate request forms and documentation
  • Properly prep and scrub patients for sterile surgical procedures as needed
  • Monitor patient parameters and notify doctor of potential concerns in times of flux/need for the surgical technicians
  • Scrub in, as necessary, with surgeons


Working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and care

Working knowledge of sterilization equipment and care

Ability to multi-task and assist surgeons and technical staff as needed for optimal surgical flow

Must work well in a team environment.

Must be able to work efficiently under stressful situations with minimal supervision and direction
